Kenya pulled up hard at the 11th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) — and Untying Kantai made sure East Africa left with receipts!
The Showmax Original series scooped Best Writing in a TV Series, proving that when it comes to fire storytelling and next-level production, Kenya is firmly in its bag. Held at the glam Eko Hotels in Lagos, this year’s AMVCAs celebrated the best of African film and TV — and Untying Kantai had its name written all over the spotlight.
So, what’s the show about?
Untying Kantai is a juicy 13-part dramedy that follows Kantai (played by Benson Ojuwa from County 49), who finds himself caught up in a shady but super profitable scheme. With money on the table and danger around every corner, things get messy real quick.
“Best Writing” isn’t just a title — it’s earned
Director Phillip Karanja from Phil It Productions was buzzing after the win:
“This award means everything. Our team put real heart into this show, and it’s amazing to see it pay off. Big love to Showmax, Africa Magic, and especially the fans. You guys made this moment happen!”
Series writer Abel Mutua added:
“From one creative to another — this win is for every single person grinding to tell African stories that matter. Our stories are magic. Let’s keep pushing!”
The cast? STACKED.
You’ll see familiar faces like:
- Pascal Tokodi (Selina)
- Blessing Lung’aho (Bwana Chairman)
- Silayio (Nafsi)
- Sanchez Ombasa (Faithless)
- Mercy Mutisya, Dennis Mugo, Mary Mwikali, and more.
It’s basically a star-studded lineup of Kenyan talent doing what they do best: dominating screens and changing narratives.
That’s not all, folks…
The Phil It team also bagged Best Indigenous Language Film (East Africa) for Makosa Ni Yangu. AND Showmax was nominated for Subterranea, a groundbreaking Kenyan sci-fi by Brian Munene and Likarion Wainaina. Kenyan content is not just showing up — it’s showing off. 🔌
Since launching in 2013, the AMVCAs have been Africa’s biggest stage for film and TV greatness. And 2025? Kenya showed up and showed out.
