Apart from the Mzee Jomo Kenyatta statue appearing at the back of the new notes, there is a new controversy.

But this one is not or constitutional as of the portrait saga.

Kenyans have failed to agree on common translation of the word Bank on the newly issued notes.

The Central Bank @CBKKenya should have consulted on this. A bank in Swahili is Benki not Banki. Banki is closer to Bangi, (Swahili for bang) @wgkantai you will probably need to reprint the new notes with the correct Swahili morpheme for the word-bank. pic.twitter.com/Ky4LUPnwNT

There are those who are staying with the old mantra, that it is Banki, which has been used since 1966, while there are those who think that this is wrong despite the time factor.

Swahili translations of the word Bank, is loosely used in Tanzania as Benki, while in Kenya, it is Banki.

Those who feel it is wrong, are benchmarking with the Tanzanian notes, which use the word Benki.

According to Swahili guru and writer Mwalimu Wala Bin Wala, the both versions are all right, as long as they are used widely among many people.

An article on Taifa Leo, also had pointed out about this issue, but differed with Walah Bin Wala’s school of thought

When pushed to the wall, Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) head of communications Wallace Kantai  ordered Kenyans to form WhatsApp Groups over the issue

But surely. It’s been ‘Banki’ since 1966. https://t.co/X7m7QL6Lrg

Haya. Tengenezeni WhatsApp group. Sisi wengine wacha tutumie pesa zilizotolewa na Banki Kuu ya Kenya. https://t.co/hHykFA2ZTp

Whereas, “banki” is used and available in dictionaries, it is “Benki” that is common and preferred by Kiswahili speakers @SwahiliSanifu pic.twitter.com/IsoEc9QVhp

Benki or Banki i don't care, my concern is the name Njoroge on those notes. Is this really acceptable? pic.twitter.com/fDOiOjrhrd

SWAHILI CHALLENGE? Should @CBKKenya have called a "BANK" in Swahili as BENKI or as BANKI (which sounds more as bhangi of bhang?). The more the new currency is reviewed, the more it shows that @njorogep was not truthful on public participation #ConsumerVoice @wgkantai @HKRotich pic.twitter.com/VsbNmgOPPG
