Lillian Ng’ang’a, the former wife of Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, has opened up about the personal desires that led to her decision to end their marriage. In an intimate conversation on the “Lessons at 30” podcast with Dr. Ofweneke, Lillian revealed how her desire for personal freedom and growth played a significant role in the breakdown of her relationship with Alfred.
Having met Alfred at the age of 25, Lillian quickly adapted to the role of First Lady of Machakos County, believing she was mature enough to take on the responsibility. However, as she entered her early 30s, Lillian began to feel a strong desire for independence. “When I got into my early 30s, I felt that there is more out there, and I wanted to break free, not from the relationship, but to be my own person,” she shared. This yearning for self-exploration and freedom led to tension between her and Alfred, sparking frequent arguments. She described the friction that emerged as she sought more for herself: “Our fights now started from, apana you can’t, we are this, this is us, we can’t break free.”
During this period of self-reflection, Lillian turned to an older friend for guidance, confiding in him about the emptiness she felt despite having “everything.” As she continued to seek her path to personal fulfillment, Lillian’s life took a new turn when she met musician Juliani.
Their connection blossomed at a time when Lillian was ready for change. “I met Juliani probably at the right time,” Lillian said. “We have a lovely son together, and he’s now two and a half years old.” She also revealed that she was initially drawn to Juliani due to his intelligence, which she found particularly attractive. Their relationship marked the beginning of a new chapter for Lillian, one that she felt aligned with her evolving desires and aspirations.
Despite moving on with Juliani, Lillian made it clear that her relationship with Alfred remained cordial. They continue to be friends, and there are no hard feelings between them. “I decided to part ways two months before publicly announcing the split,” she revealed, though she refrained from going into specifics about the reasons behind their divorce.
Through her personal journey, Lillian has embraced her desires for independence, self-growth, and freedom, while maintaining a positive relationship with her ex-husband and cherishing her new life with Juliani.
