Kenyan singer Otile Brown has publicly responded to allegations made by fellow artist Jovial, who accused him of failing to pay her fairly for their successful collaborations and preventing her from reaching her full potential in the music industry. The exchange has attracted widespread attention across East Africa, with fans closely following the claims and counterclaims made by both musicians. Their professional relationship produced several popular songs that introduced Jovial to a wider audience, making the dispute particularly significant for the Kenyan music scene. As both artists continue to share their versions of events, the controversy has also reignited discussions about music royalties, publishing rights and artist contracts in Africa. Beyond the personal disagreements, the situation highlights the financial and legal challenges that many musicians face despite releasing commercially successful songs.

The dispute began after Jovial appeared in an interview with Alex Mwakideu, where she alleged that she struggled financially even while their hit song “Such Kinda Love” was enjoying widespread success across Kenya. According to Jovial, she was living in difficult conditions in Mirema and sleeping on the floor despite the song’s popularity. She claimed she was not receiving her rightful share of the revenue generated by their collaborations, suggesting that the financial rewards from the music did not reach her. Her remarks quickly spread across social media and entertainment platforms, prompting many fans to question how revenue from successful collaborations is shared among artists. The interview also sparked renewed conversations about transparency within Kenya’s music industry and whether upcoming musicians receive fair compensation from established artists.

In response, Otile Brown rejected the accusations and explained that the issue was more complicated than simply withholding payments. He revealed that he himself had spent years without collecting publishing royalties because he lacked sufficient knowledge about the business side of the music industry. According to Otile, he only recently found professionals who helped him recover money that had remained unpaid for years. He argued that royalty collection and music distribution systems across many African countries remain underdeveloped, making it difficult for artists to receive consistent income from their recorded music. Because of these industry challenges, he said many musicians prefer to exchange songs and collaborate rather than depend entirely on royalty splits that are often delayed or difficult to track.

Otile further stated that despite the industry’s shortcomings, he had still sent Jovial payments whenever their music performed well commercially. He insisted that he never intended to deny her earnings and maintained that he always tried to support her career whenever possible. According to his explanation, financial arrangements between artists are not always straightforward because streaming income, publishing royalties and performance revenue are collected through different channels. He suggested that many misunderstandings arise because artists themselves often lack complete information about how music rights operate. Otile therefore maintained that the dispute should not be viewed as evidence that he deliberately refused to compensate his collaborator.

The singer also detailed the personal support he claims to have provided beyond their musical partnership. Otile alleged that he wrote most of the songs they recorded together, contributing significantly to the creative process behind their biggest releases. He further claimed that he paid Jovial’s hospital bills when she gave birth and arranged VIP transportation for her after her delivery to ensure she travelled comfortably. Otile additionally alleged that a DNA test confirmed he was not the biological father of her child, addressing rumours that had circulated publicly. He also accused Jovial of releasing a song that he had written without first obtaining his permission, adding another layer to the already public disagreement.

As the discussion intensified, Otile openly criticised Jovial’s attitude and decision making, arguing that her own actions had slowed her professional growth. He described her as stubborn and unwilling to accept guidance from people who wanted to help her improve her career. According to Otile, she frequently made emotional decisions instead of carefully considering professional advice, which ultimately affected her long-term progress in the music industry. He expressed disappointment that an artist with considerable talent had not achieved even greater success despite the opportunities presented to her. His comments reflected his belief that personal discipline, humility and a willingness to learn are just as important as musical ability when building a lasting career.

Otile also argued that Jovial’s current success was built largely on songs that he had written for her. He claimed she had never written a single line in several of the songs that continue to generate income through live performances and shows. He further revealed that he was the person who suggested Tanzanian star Marioo include a female artist in one of their collaborations, creating another important opportunity for Jovial’s career. According to Otile, these efforts demonstrated that he consistently worked to expand her exposure rather than limit her opportunities. He insisted that while he could open doors and provide support, he could never force someone to make the right career decisions or guarantee their success.

The disagreement between Otile Brown and Jovial has become one of the most talked about stories in the East African entertainment industry because it combines personal conflict with broader questions about artist management, royalties and creative ownership. While Jovial maintains that she was not fairly compensated during the height of their successful collaborations, Otile insists that he supported her financially, creatively and personally while also dealing with the same royalty challenges affecting many African musicians. Their conflicting accounts illustrate how misunderstandings over contracts, publishing rights and financial expectations can strain even the most successful artistic partnerships. As fans continue to debate the issue, the controversy serves as another reminder of the importance of clear agreements, financial transparency and proper music rights education. Regardless of how the dispute develops, it has already sparked valuable conversations about protecting artists and improving the systems that govern the African music industry.
