The Harambee Stars have impressed fans with their strong showing at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. Many attribute this success to the financial incentives announced by President William Ruto. Actress Serah Teshna, wife of former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama, recently highlighted the role of money in motivating the team.
President Ruto initially pledged KSh 1 million to each player for a win and KSh 500,000 for a draw during the tournament. On August 11, 2025, he increased the reward to KSh 2.5 million if the team defeated Zambia in their final game, further fueling the team’s drive.
Harambee Stars remain unbeaten, having won 1-0 against DR Congo, drawn 1-1 with Angola, and defeated Morocco 1-0. This unbeaten streak has captured national attention and revived hope for Kenyan football.
In a candid conversation captured on video, Serah Teshna argued that the financial promises are a key factor behind the team’s recent success. She said, “I think you are going to agree with me that the problem with Kenyan football is the money because after these guys were promised KSh 1 million for a win, and KSh 500,000 for a draw, they are performing exceptionally. True or false?”
Victor Wanyama agreed, stating, “Ah, somehow true, because you know money is everything. It’s a motivation, and motivation is everything. You can see what he has done since he took over.”
When asked about the tough match against Morocco, Wanyama acknowledged the challenge but expressed confidence in the team’s preparation.
“Yes, I expected it very tough game for Morocco, and it was a tough game.”
Wanyama also praised Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy for his tactical approach, which he credited for the team’s positive results. “We have McCarthy and his tactics paid off,” he added.
The video sparked widespread reaction among Kenyans, many of whom agreed with Serah Teshna’s assessment that financial motivation plays a crucial role in sports performance. The increased rewards appear to have injected new energy into the Harambee Stars, enhancing their focus and commitment.
As Harambee Stars continue their campaign, the combination of strong leadership under Coach McCarthy and President Ruto’s financial backing seems to be paying dividends. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the team aims to build on its unbeaten run and make history for Kenyan football.
