Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, at an Ayurvedic eye hospital research centre in Koothattukulam, Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. The 78-year-old politician suffered a heart attack while taking a walk and was rushed to the facility, but doctors were unable to save him.

Odinga was a central figure in Kenyan politics, widely credited with shaping the country’s democratic landscape. His leadership spanned decades, and he remained a symbol of resilience and political activism. His passing has left citizens and political figures grappling with the loss of a leader whose influence shaped modern Kenya.

The news triggered an outpouring of tributes on social media. Comedian-turned-politician and Lang’ata MP, Jalang’o, shared an emotional video mourning Odinga. He posted a black-themed tribute alongside a song titled “Jowi” by Coster Ojwang, which translates to “beloved” in Luo. His message reflected the deep personal and national loss felt by many Kenyans.

Social media platforms have since been filled with expressions of grief from ordinary citizens and public figures alike. Kenyans recalled Odinga’s commitment to democratic reforms, his advocacy for social justice, and his efforts to unite communities. Many noted that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations of leaders.

The sudden nature of Odinga’s death has left families, supporters, and the political community in shock. Reports indicate he was actively engaging in health and personal routines in India when the heart attack occurred. Authorities are coordinating with Kenyan officials regarding his return home and state funeral arrangements.

Odinga’s death marks the end of an era in Kenyan politics. His influence extended beyond borders, and he remained a figure of national importance until his final days. Kenyans are now coming together to honor his contributions and preserve the legacy of a statesman who played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s democratic journey.
