Kenyan actor and filmmaker Brian Kabugi, popularly known as Real Bugi, has premiered his latest project, Mid Young Crisis: The Return, a short film exploring the realities of modern youth through love, friendship, and self-discovery. The film premiered on Saturday, October 11, at Anga Diamond Cinema, Diamond Plaza 2.

Mid Young Crisis: The Return continues the story from the popular YouTube series Mid Young Crisis, delving into the lives of Gen Z characters as they navigate online pressures, emotional vulnerability, and the challenges of everyday life. Real Bugi, who served as creator, lead actor, and director, explained that the project reflects the real experiences of young people today. He said, “We tried to get deep with the writing and highlight topics such as childhood traumas. You can see how that shows up in conversations between Bugi and Makena. The reality of relationships, moving on, getting back together, and not knowing how to really move on is something many young people experience.”

The film carries important lessons for audiences, emphasizing the importance of healing and self-growth. Bugi advised, “Don’t go back to your ex, heal your wounds, don’t let your wounds define you, and stay true to yourself always.”

Bugi also highlighted the need to strengthen the connection between creators and viewers. “The future for films is creating a mass audience and having distribution platforms that cater to them. We need to bring back cinema culture and have platforms not dependent on TV stations, allowing direct contact with audiences,” he said.

The cast features Makena Kahuha, Claudia Naisabwa, Faiz O, Nungari Kiore, and Bugi himself. Behind the camera, Festurs Kir served as director of photography, Brian Obigwa as director, Kenrich Mwanza as writer, and Anchie Nginja oversaw production.

Mid Young Crisis: The Return has been well received, resonating with young audiences while sparking conversations about friendship, love, and personal growth, and contributing to the revival of cinema culture in Kenya.
