Dancehall legend Vybz Kartel joined Kenyans in mourning the sudden death of former prime minister Raila Odinga on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. Raila passed away in India after suffering a heart attack during his morning walk. Doctors attempted resuscitation using CPR and other emergency measures, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Kartel honored Raila with a video shared on his TikTok page, where he has been most active since his release from prison in 2024. In the video, he reenacted one of Raila’s most memorable speeches, originally delivered during a June 2025 Memorandum of Understanding signing at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre. Kartel said: “I believe strongly that no matter our disagreements, our visions, and disappointments, we have to put the country first.”
He added a personal message, captioning the video: “Rest in peace Baba Odinga. The legend Raila Amollo Odinga 🇰🇪” The tribute highlighted Kartel’s respect for Raila’s leadership and his awareness of Kenyan politics.
Kartel’s tribute reinforced his connection with Kenyan audiences and showcased his role in joining the nation in mourning one of its most influential leaders.
President William Ruto confirmed that Raila Odinga will receive a state funeral, with a seven-day mourning period and the national flag at half-mast. The funeral committee announced that the state funeral will take place on Friday, October 17, followed by burial rites on Sunday, October 19.
