Data from The Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) notes the most common stolen cars and why are prone to theft in Kenya.

Below are some of the features of the most stolen cars in Kenya as revealed by AKI in 2017 data collection

  1. A car valued below 1 million will likely be stolen
  2. A car that is white in colour
  3. Most stolen cars were Toyota brands
  4. Silver, black, blue and grey vehicles were also in great danger accordingly while least targeted are Green, red, gold, pearl, purple, orange and maroon
  5. Thieves also like Isuzu, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Mercedes Benz in that order
  6. Those who own Volvo, Honda, BMW, Ford, and Hyundai in that order are considered safer
  7. Station wagons, saloon cars, lorries and pick up follow the same order in regards to preference by car thieves
  8. Parked cars were prone to getting lost as well as their spare parts going missing
  9. Nairobi is a hotspot for car thieves due to high number of cars
  10. Trailers and buses made the bottom list of most stolen vehicles

How to Prevent Your Car from Getting Stolen in Kenya

To ensure you stay away from thieves with your car or vehicle while in Kenya, you need to put some pre-caution measures such as one listed below

  1. Park only in legal controlled zones which is in good view of security facilities
  2. Do not leave valuables exposed in your, this habits invites thieves very easily
  3. Do not park the car facing the get, it gives the thieves hard time to reverse and gives the owner room to go after the thieves
  4. Have lights and horn in good condition since they serve as rescue items during carjacking
  5. Have your vehicle fitted with a tracking device that is always in good condition.
  6. Placing extra number plates on detachable parts of the car such as on windscreens and side mirrors can be a nice idea
