Kenyan rapper Khaligraph Jones has broken his silence following a viral video showing him and fellow artist Arrow Bwoy being chased and tear-gassed by police during the June 25 protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
The “Mazishi” hitmaker, dressed in an all-navy blue outfit and wearing a face mask, was seen attempting to reason with officers before police threw teargas canisters in their direction. The footage also showed Arrow Bwoy being whipped by an officer as they tried to evade the police.
In a heartfelt social media post, Khaligraph condemned police brutality in Kenya, narrating his experience and urging for an end to such violence. “When you peacefully demonstrate, and they start shooting at you with live teargas canisters. End police brutality in Kenya,” he wrote on Instagram.
Earlier, singer Nadia Mukami also expressed her outrage after police were seen caning Arrow Bwoy during the protests. She lamented the excessive force used, pointing out that her boyfriend and father to her child was unarmed and merely trying to leave the scene. Nadia pleaded with authorities not to arrest him, emphasizing the unjust treatment.
The June 25 protests marked the first anniversary of the Gen Z demonstrations in 2024, where many young Kenyans were shot by police during anti-Finance Bill protests. The demonstrations reignited calls for justice, police accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights.
Khaligraph’s video and message continue to fuel discussions around the role of law enforcement in handling peaceful protests, with many Kenyans demanding reforms to prevent further brutality.
For those interested, Khaligraph’s full interaction with the police can be viewed on his Instagram page, where he shares a firsthand account of the events.
