Hollywood actress Viola Davis sparked reactions on social media after posting a tribute to Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai on Instagram. In her now-deleted post, Davis shared an image celebrating Maathai and captioned it, “Breaking News: Wangari Maathai, Kenya’s first female professor and first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.” She added, “Congrats my queen, well deserved.”

Kenyans were quick to point out that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Maathai in 2004, and she passed away in 2011. Many found humor in Davis presenting the story as breaking news. Comments ranged from playful jabs to lighthearted jokes. One user wrote, “Viola, we appreciate the love, but Maathai has been resting for 13 years.” Another commented, “Maybe breaking news in heaven?” Others defended Davis, saying her post still honored Maathai’s legacy.

Maathai made history as the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in peace, democracy, and sustainable development. She founded the Green Belt Movement, planting over 50 million trees in Kenya, inspiring global environmental initiatives. She was also the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate, studying in Germany and at the University of Nairobi. Her early education included a degree in Biological Sciences from Mount St. Scholastica College in Kansas, followed by a Master of Science from the University of Pittsburgh.

The incident brought renewed attention to Maathai’s achievements, with many Kenyans sharing quotes, photos, and memories to celebrate her contributions. Viola Davis, known for roles in Fences, How to Get Away with Murder, and The Woman King, has not commented on the post since deleting it.

Netizens offered a mix of humor and appreciation. Some joked about time travel, anniversaries, or potential movie roles, while others emphasized the importance of remembering Maathai’s impact on Kenya and the world. The post, although mistaken, reignited admiration for one of Kenya’s most influential figures.
