Award-winning gospel singer Zion Njeri has shared the challenges she faced as an upcoming artiste and expressed gratitude to God for her journey. Her latest gospel single, Umenipendelea, celebrates God’s unmerited favour and love.
In an interview with TUKO.co.ke, Zion recounted discovering her talent at a young age while singing in church. Her mother, a reverend, recognized her gift and encouraged her to perform. The death of her mother in 2020 motivated Zion to pursue music seriously as a career.
Her early studio experiences were difficult. “I was chased out during a studio session because I was an upcoming artiste. They prioritized established singers. I waited 12 hours and was told to come back the next day,” she revealed.
Zion also faced rejection from peers. “I was ready to go for a mission with my team, and they chased me out from their car saying I wasn’t in their plan. That really broke me,” she said.
Despite these setbacks, Zion persisted. Her faith and resilience helped her rise in the gospel music scene. She has since released songs like Shukrani, Unatosha, and Utukufu.
Umenipendelea features Obby Alpha and reflects Zion’s personal testimony of divine grace. “I have seen how God has favoured me and loved me. I decided to put it in the form of a song,” she said.
Zion credited her mother’s prayers for her success. “She prayed for favour in my life. Little did I know one day I would sing #Umenipendelea,” she added.
Most of Zion’s songs are inspired by the Holy Spirit, though ideas sometimes come through melodies and beats.
Zion’s story highlights the competitive nature of the Kenyan gospel industry. Some artistes, like Mark, have criticized peers for jealousy and rivalry rather than support, pointing to a culture where collaboration is limited.
Zion Njeri’s journey shows that resilience, faith, and divine inspiration can turn early struggles into a thriving gospel music career. Her new single, Umenipendelea, continues to affirm God’s love and favour in her life.
