National government and Siaya County government have come under harsh criticism after James Oyugi, a victim of COVID-19 who succumbed to the deadly virus was given undignified burial.
James is said to have traveled from the coast region, before his arrival that was met with eminent death.
- James is said to have driven from Mombasa on 5th April together with one of his two wives and two children.
- The 59 year old, who was an employee of Kenya Ports Authority arrived in Nairobi and left on 6th April, the day President Uhuru Kenyatta announced cessation in four counties including Nairobi Metropolitan Area.
- Unfortunate for him, he was involved in a minor road accident at Awasi, which is along Kericho-Kisumu road
- His car was towed and his brother who lives in Kisumu came to pick up him before he continued his journey to Siaya County in Ukwala area, Kamalunga village
- Oyugi was rushed to Matibabu Foundation Hospital on 10th April after complaining of strong cough. He later succumbed at the same health centre
- His blood samples tested positive at Centre for Global Health Research Kemri labs in Kisumu.
- Health Cabinet Secretary Mutai Kagwe reported Onyango was the eighth person to die from the virus
- Kenyans criticized Siaya County Government accusing officials of giving Oyugi undignified burial. Oyugi was buried around 1am to 2am
- Robert Alai, a viral blogger aluded that Oyugi was murdered in connection with various scandals reported at KPA
- His brother Zack Onyango says that the family was denied a chance to accord Oyugi a decent burial
About 45 people among them nurses and clinical officers from Matibabu Hospital in Ukwala where he passed away, have been put on forced quarantine at Siaya KMTC campus grounds.
