A suspected sick Chinese national in Kitui county has thrown the health facilities into emergency concern

The workers from Kitui at a road construction camp in Mutomo raised the alarm when they were ordered not to come into contact with the suspected who had traveled from the source of the deadly virus, Wuhan in China.

The suspected was allegedly isolated and put to strict orders including being served food through the window.

The suspected patient has not been identified but it is known that he works for Sino Hydro Corporation — the firm constructing the Kitui-Kibwezi road .

A cook was told to watch the man and avoid any close contact.

He is said to have jetted into Nairobi during the weekend and picked a taxi from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Mutomo after Sino Hydro Corporation drivers reportedly declined to pick him up from the airport over health fears.

Kitui county health workers who reported to the scare were however denied access to the camp

Kitui County Chief Officer for Health Richard Muthoka said  the camp was accessed only after police were called on duty.

“Our medical team wasn’t allowed to access the Chinese camp in Mutomo but we have taken the necessary measures to swiftly establish what is happening and ensure all people working and mingling with the foreigners are safe,” said Dr Muthoka.

According to one of the workers, he was one of the 18 Chinese nationals who arrived in the country last week without being quarantined for 14 days.

“They have isolated only the one who is critically sick. The rest are roaming freely on the Kitui-Mutomo road as they perform their normal duties,” said the worker who did not wish to be named.
