Many universities in Kenya have been facing a bed bug menace in their hostels for some time now despite the university’s effort to fumigate the hostels every holiday. The little monsters are giving students sleepless nights by biting and sucking their blood. Some universities that have been hit with the bed bug invasion include; Kenyatta University, University of Nairobi, Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) among others with JKUAT (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology) having had been the most affected. Other universities like Moi university have also reported the bed bug invasion and how the little creatures are making their sleep unbearable.
JKUAT has currently been the most affected by the little vampires which seem to have become immune to the pesticides and have caused some of the students to rent outside the school in order to get their sleep back. This is quite ironical considering JKUAT is a university for agriculture and technology.
Despite the bugs being known not to cause or spread any known diseases, they tend to cause extreme itchiness of the skin which if you scratch yourself very hard then you end up with secondary skin infections. The best way to treat the itchiness is to apply antiseptic creams and avoid scratching yourself.
Early last year, Kenyatta University imported two machine from Germany that costed the university a sum total of Ksh 1.7 million with each costing 850,000, for eradicating the bed bugs. It seems like the other universities will have to follow the same measure in order eradicate the bugs completely.
