As Kenya faces widespread youth protests over police brutality and the soaring cost of living, First Daughter Charlene Ruto’s recent call for generational reconciliation has sparked mixed reactions across the country. Her message, shared on the symbolic Saba Saba Day, came at a time when the nation is grappling with intense public demonstrations.

On July 7, Charlene Ruto posted photos from a youth mentorship program attended by students and young leaders from all 47 counties. She praised these young leaders for stepping up to provide objective-driven representation and engaging in structured dialogues aimed at lasting solutions beyond temporary attention.

In her words, she described the youth’s courage and leadership as inspiring and expressed pride in their commitment to fostering positive change.

Earlier that day, Charlene emphasized the importance of generational reconciliation and faith, referencing a biblical passage from Malachi 4:6, which calls for turning the hearts of fathers to children and vice versa. She questioned whether Kenya still has a God-fearing generation, tying faith to the need for unity between generations.

However, Charlene’s remarks were met with divided views given the ongoing nationwide protests led largely by young people demanding justice and economic relief. The protests, particularly on Saba Saba Day, turned violent in some areas, resulting in the deaths of four protesters in Nairobi and Kajiado counties. This loss of life further fueled demands for government accountability and dialogue.

While some Kenyans appreciated Charlene’s efforts in youth mentorship and leadership development, others felt that more direct engagement by government leaders, including President William Ruto, was necessary to address the root causes of unrest.

The recent protests have highlighted the frustrations of a generation facing economic hardships, perceived governance failures, and police brutality. Many hope that the government will respond with meaningful reforms and open dialogue to restore peace and trust.

Charlene Ruto’s call for generational reconciliation reflects a broader desire for unity, but the path toward healing will require concrete actions and sincere engagement with youth concerns. As Kenya navigates this critical period, the voices of young people remain central to shaping the country’s future.
