Wangari Mwangi’s journey from bartender to Reserve Brand Ambassador for Diageo is a story of grit, curiosity, and a passion for craft. Her path into the world of luxury spirits blends determination, creative curiosity, and a drive to deliver premium experiences. In her role, she shapes gin culture in Kenya while showcasing the sophistication and craftsmanship behind Diageo’s portfolio, connecting global trends to local audiences.
Mwangi’s career began out of necessity while funding her college education. After being cut off financially by her father, she took a job at an agency promoting an energy drink in bars. When sales plateaued, the agency pivoted to cocktails using the energy drink as a mixer, and Mwangi’s interest in mixology earned her a chance to learn from an expert. “The rest around craft and technique, I learned on the job, and as they say, the rest is history,” she recalls. This early experience laid the foundation for her career in luxury spirits.
Her exposure to luxury began while working for the legendary Chris Kirubi, whose attention to detail in cars, fashion, and lifestyle left a lasting impression. Mwangi notes, “I got to appreciate luxury not just because it was expensive, but because of the attention to detail and aura of exclusivity it exudes.” Meeting Diageo Kenya through her work as a bartender eventually led her to pursue a career with the company, combining her love for quality spirits with her interest in premium experiences.
As a Luxury Brand Ambassador, Mwangi’s days are diverse and fast-paced. One day she may host a mixology workshop for bartenders, the next conduct a paired dinner experience for CEOs, and later travel internationally for competitions. “The only constant is client-facing engagements,” she explains. Her role requires adaptability, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of what high-net-worth clients expect from premium brand experiences.
Mwangi emphasizes that luxury in spirits goes beyond price—it is about intention, craftsmanship, and the experience. From Tanqueray’s carefully selected botanicals to expertly curated events, she ensures each interaction reflects quality and purpose. In Kenya, she notes, luxury also celebrates culture, blending global sophistication with local flair. Her work has elevated gin culture, encouraging mixologists to creatively infuse Kenyan herbs such as basil, rosemary, or hibiscus into cocktails.
She also tackles the challenges of a male-dominated industry with determination. Mwangi recalls early resistance from her father and initial skepticism from colleagues, but competition and high standards have fueled her drive. Her approach combines expertise, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence, helping to shape Kenya’s evolving spirits scene.
Mwangi brings the Tanqueray brand to life through both in-person activations and online engagement. Her social media efforts, including her former handle ‘Wangari Tanqueray,’ helped create brand association while highlighting craft and creativity. She works closely with bartenders on occasions like World Gin Day to showcase cocktail-making techniques, emphasizing the story behind each drink. Her personal favorite is the basil smash cocktail, valued for its refreshing citrus-basil combination and perfect pairing with seafood.
Through her journey, Wangari Mwangi demonstrates that passion, skill, and attention to detail are essential for success in luxury spirits. She continues to influence gin culture in Kenya, crafting experiences that celebrate both global excellence and local creativity, while inspiring others to explore the world of premium beverages.
