Joyce Mutoka
A strong believer of community reconciliation: Joyce Mutoka has worked with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission where she implemented a number of activities geared toward fostering peace and understanding in Kenya following the 2007-08 post-election violence. She is also involved with UWIANO Platform for Peace, a conflict early warning and response platform established to track and respond to conflict.
Knowing the importance of reading, Joyce is the co-founder of Chanzo, an organization that works to create and foster a reading culture among young people throughout Nairobi and Kenya. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from University College Roosevelt specializing in International Law. She has experience in transitional justice, human rights, governance and project management.
As a YALI Fellow, Joyce plans to expand the work of Chanzo to include a basis for community reconciliation through documenting and sharing the stories and experiences of young people in Kenya.
Youth Village Kenya acknowledge Joyce as she adds to her own experiences by traveling and learning in the United States. Congratulations Joyce!
