Remotasks, the online platform that revolutionized remote work opportunities by enabling users to complete tasks from anywhere and earn in dollars, has abruptly exited the Kenyan market. Kenyan users seeking access to the Remotasks website were greeted with a disheartening error message indicating that they were blocked from the site.
This move comes as a significant blow to many Kenyans, particularly the youth, who have increasingly relied on Remotasks to secure flexible employment opportunities. The platform has garnered popularity among unemployed youth as well as individuals seeking supplementary income from low-paid or part-time jobs.
Tasks on Remotasks spanned a variety of categories, including copywriting, media labelling, and AI model training, offering users a diverse array of opportunities to earn. Payments were disbursed in US dollars through platforms like PayPal, with users compensated per accepted task, the amount varying based on task complexity.
Remotasks band Kenyan Users
The abrupt exit from the Kenyan market was communicated to users via email, with Remotasks officially discontinuing operations in Kenya as of March 8, 2024. Users were notified that they would be off-boarded from their current projects and instructed to receive payments associated with their completed work.
The platform gained widespread attention in Kenya earlier this year when a viral video showcased a young Kenyan, Brian Kipchumba, sharing his success story on the platform with President William Ruto. Kipchumba, an ICT student, boasted of earning over $200 on the platform since joining in December of 2023.
As of now, attempts to access Remotasks result in a discouraging error message, leaving many Kenyan users disheartened and uncertain about their future job prospects. The sudden departure of Remotasks from the Kenyan market highlights the volatility and unpredictability inherent in the gig economy, where platforms can swiftly enter or exit markets, profoundly impacting the livelihoods of users.
