In December 2024, digital cartoonist Gideon Kibet, popularly known as Kibet Bull, made the decision to temporarily deactivate his X (formerly Twitter) account following threats he had been receiving. Kibet, known for his bold social media posts that have often criticized the state, has not publicly named the individuals responsible for the threats. However, it is widely believed that these threats are linked to his outspoken views.

Through a statement from his close friend, Billy Mwangi, who is also a former abductee, Kibet revealed the situation. “Kibet Bull has deactivated his X account after receiving numerous threats within the last 22 hours,” Billy shared. This step comes as Kibet seeks to protect his safety amidst growing tensions over his controversial content on social media.

Kibet’s deactivation of his account is part of a broader context of unrest surrounding social media activists in the region. In a troubling trend, Kibet was among those who disappeared in December 2024 after their social media activities led to friction with authorities. His decision to step away from the platform was described as a temporary measure, with plans to return once the situation calms down.

This move highlights the risks faced by digital content creators who challenge governmental positions and speak out against perceived injustices. Kibet Bull’s courageous decision to speak out and his temporary withdrawal from social media underscores the tension between free expression and personal safety in today’s digital age.
