Who is Mc Nelmo?
Nelmo is a young critical thinker who believes that nothing is impossible. A gospel dancehall and reggae artist from Mukuru slums, Nairobi Kenya.
What inspired you into entertainment industry?
Its hard to tell what inspired me but what I can say is that I have passion in entertainment and specifically arts, I believe art is enough inspiration.
Why is your focus on youth and entertainment?
My focus is to change entertainment into edutainment, I want to be able to grow to a point that I will be able to get enough time and resources to mentor artist and assist them to grow, since success is not how big you are but how big are your wings of support.
What do you think are the Challenges that face young people joining entertainment from the Ghetto?
Talking from experience is lack of resources and mentorship, entertainment mostly film and music needs quality which is expensive, with this makes many youths leaves the entertainment industry some end up into crime.
What are some of the difficulties you face as an Mc?
There many challenges but most important is recognition, airplay and respect, in most radio and tv station it’s hard to get airplay if you don’t have connection its hard, the biggest is being consistent since the entertainment industry is all about consistency.
What motivated you to start Mukuru Award?
We have many change makers in mukuru but they were not being apreciated before inception of Mukuru Awards. The aim was just to award change makers in mukuru hence encouraging more people to make a change and improve their arts, talents and initiative for a successful mukuru community.
What do you aim to achieve with Mukuru awards?
To have a successful mukuru community which will be a force to reckon with in Kenya on the arts and talent. We also want to also want to sell mukuru and show the positive side of mukuru.
As a youth leader and activister. What do you feel needs to be done or implemented in Kenya to create a more enabling environment for young people who need to develop their talent?
We need to change our education system and put a system that give equal chance to developing talents. We need mor academies to develop talents.
What do you look up for inspiration?
Nature and travelling inspires me a lot then i top up with music.
Where do you see your entertainment impact in the next 5 years?
Have setup a record label and being able to host my own concerts of international standards.
Entertainment…what do you do for fun?
I love movies and documentaries, and spending time with friends.
Favourite places to hangout in Nairobi?
Strange but I believe at my house is the best.
What music do you listen to?
I listen to any music as long as i like it despite the genre.
What do you look for in a life partner?
Understanding, loving and someone who can be a good manager to my personal life among others.
What advice would you like to give young people who would like to be take their talent to another level?
Do what you can with what you have, be humble, take chances and express yourself always.
How has Social Media changed entertainment in Kenya?
As an entertainer and you not on social media you are irrelevant, social media has revolutionized entertainment and its now easier to learn what other artist around the world are doing use it wisely and you wont regret. Al in all social media plays only 30% in your field 70% you have to do it yourself and offline.
