Alvin Oduor, popularly known by his stage name Mluo, has become a TikTok sensation, amassing over 13 million likes and 174,000 followers. His journey to social media stardom is one marked by determination, resilience, and an ever-evolving creative vision. Mluo, a third-year journalism student, shared his story of how he began creating comedic content in 2019 while still in high school and how his life has changed since then.

Early Beginnings and Inspiration

Mluo’s comedic journey began when he was still in Form Two, inspired by popular comedians such as Flaqo and Comedian Mwirigi. “I used to watch comedians at the time, and I felt that I could do the same thing, but in a better or more unique way,” Mluo shared. He initially started creating content on Instagram before transitioning to TikTok, seeking to explore a broader audience. His creativity, combined with a unique approach, began to gain attention, setting the stage for his eventual rise to fame.

Breakthrough Moment

While Mluo had been creating content for some time, his breakthrough moment came in 2022, after he joined Multimedia University (MMU). With more time on his hands, he decided to take content creation more seriously. His first video on TikTok didn’t go viral immediately, but it received positive engagement. “The first video didn’t go super viral, but it did well. Then I did the second one, and it also went viral,” he recalled.

His big break came during the October 2022 MMU strike, when one of his videos gained massive traction. Despite the setback of having the video taken down for violating TikTok’s community guidelines, Mluo’s content continued to go viral, propelling him to greater heights.

Overcoming Challenges

Like many creators, Mluo’s journey has not been without obstacles. In 2023, a heartbreak led to a period of content creation struggle. “In 2023, I had this one heartbreak which I think made me lose focus a bit,” Mluo admitted. Despite the emotional setback, Mluo remained steadfast, using his experiences as fuel for his growth.

One notable aspect of Mluo’s content is his comedic skits, which often feature imitations of figures such as President William Ruto. “In December 2023, I met fellow creators Mwirigi, Kamakia, and Lenny Vibes, and they told me I could actually imitate the president,” he explained. This advice led to some of his most viral videos, showcasing his ability to turn humor into a powerful form of expression.

Secret to Success

Mluo attributes his success to consistency and uniqueness. “By posting every day, TikTok’s algorithm suggests your videos to more people, and people get used to your content,” he explained. His commitment to daily content creation, combined with his distinctive comedic style, has allowed him to build a loyal following and secure brand deals, leading to a steady stream of income.

His family has supported his journey, and he now proves that his hard work is paying off, earning both recognition and financial success.

Looking Ahead: Plans for 2025

As Mluo continues to build his TikTok presence, he is setting his sights on diversifying his content. In 2025, he plans to venture into music and YouTube, with aspirations to expand his reach and income streams. “I want to release new songs and push my content on YouTube to further accelerate my income streams. I know 2025 will be good for me,” he said, expressing confidence in his ability to succeed in these new ventures.

Music has already become a part of Mluo’s repertoire, with his song “Chapo Nne na Ndengu” going viral on TikTok. This is just the beginning of his plans to integrate music and comedy in creative ways.

The Future

Mluo’s unique take on everyday life, often capturing relatable moments at places like kinyozis (barbershops) and butcheries, has resonated with audiences. His ability to find humor in ordinary situations, combined with his passion for content creation, has positioned him for continued success. “I want to continue growing and get to a place where I can organize events,” Mluo said. With his strong work ethic and clear vision for the future, Mluo is poised to achieve even greater success.

Through his journey, Mluo has proven that consistency, a unique perspective, and a love for creativity can take one far in the world of content creation. As he prepares for the next phase of his career, there’s no doubt that his influence will continue to grow.
