Rachael Wainaina
A business woman, filmmaker and community worker: Rachael Wainaina is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Film Village of Kenya, planning to be the largest film city in Africa offering a ‘one-stop shop’ for any film service. She is also the Founder and Director of Youth Film Platform, an organization empowering underprivileged youths with professional and practical skills in multi-media. A leader for women, Rachael also has an empowerment program working with over 2000 women across 30 counties in Kenya. Her goal is to eradicate poverty.
Rachael has partnered with many institutions on film projects and has also attended the Cannes Film Festival and Discop Africa. She received an Unsung Hero Award 2011 from U.S. Embassy Nairobi, was awarded for her initiatives during the Kenya at 50 celebrations by the Kiambu County government and was rated as one of the Top 40 Women in Film in Africa by Film Biz Africa magazine in Nigeria.
As a YALI Fellow, Rachael will expand her networks and continue to be a leader in film. She will empower youth to push for success.
