Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Raila Odinga recently issued a stern caution to Coast leaders following their endorsement of former Mombasa governor Hassan Joho as the next party leader. Raila’s remarks, delivered during an event in Malindi, Kilifi County, highlighted the potential pitfalls of regional endorsements within the party.
Emphasis of unity in ODM- Raila
Raila emphasized the importance of unity within the ODM, stressing that regional endorsements could ultimately weaken and fragment the party. He expressed concerns that such actions could lead to internal divisions, ultimately compromising the party’s strength and coherence.
“We need everyone in our team because that is the only way we can be strong. We do not want these campaigns that can break the party,” Raila cautioned, underlining the need for inclusivity and a united front among party members.
While acknowledging the Coast region’s endorsement of Joho, Raila urged leaders from Kwale, Kilifi, and Mombasa Counties to provide substantive justifications for their support of Joho as the next party leader. He emphasized the importance of selecting a candidate based on merit and suitability rather than regional affiliations.
Joho to steer ODM’s wheel
Raila also reiterated ODM’s commitment to democratic processes, stating that when the time came for him to step down, the party would engage in a transparent and inclusive selection process to choose his successor. He emphasized ODM’s reputation as the most democratic party in East and Central Africa, pledging fair opportunities for all aspiring leaders within the party.
The event in Malindi saw the presence of notable leaders such as governors Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa) and Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi), as well as other influential figures within the party structure.
Looking ahead, Raila Odinga’s potential transition from ODM party leader could occur if he secures the African Union Commission chairmanship in February 2025. This prospect has spurred interest among other ODM leaders, including ODM Chairman John Mbadi and National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, who have expressed aspirations to succeed Raila in leading the party.
As ODM navigates these internal dynamics, Raila’s caution serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between regional interests and party cohesion, urging members to prioritize unity and inclusivity for the party’s long-term strength and success.
