Samuel Abisai, who won a KSh 221 million jackpot, has shared the impact of sudden wealth on his personal life and relationships. In a candid interview on the Iko Nini podcast, Abisai described the intense pressure and attention that followed his win, revealing how it strained connections with friends and relatives in his Umoja neighbourhood in Nairobi.
Abisai, the second-last born in a family of 12 children, recalled that the jackpot win brought both excitement and challenges. “I was at a friend’s house in Kahawa that day, and I did not sleep that night,” he said. The next afternoon, the winnings were reflected in his account. However, the money came with unexpected issues. Local friends and extended family began demanding shares, with some camping outside his home and others seeking school fees. “It got to a point where I said I wished I had not won the money,” Abisai admitted.
The attention and pressure caused him to lose many friends and strained his family relationships. To cope, he flew to Holland for a month, staying with a mentor who taught him financial management. On returning to Kenya, Abisai invested wisely. He bought an apartment in Lavington, later renting it out, and purchased a new home where he currently lives. He also gave his Umoja house and belongings to a friend.
Abisai credited his family for guidance during the transition. His father, who runs a shop in Kakamega, encouraged him to focus on purpose rather than pleasing others. Despite winning the jackpot, Abisai noted he was not destitute before the win, as he had around KSh 12 million from importing goods from China.
Abisai’s story highlights the complex reality of sudden wealth. While the KSh 221 million transformed his financial standing, it also brought challenges that required careful navigation, mentorship, and strategic investments to secure long-term stability.
