It was in 2002 when a researcher from the University of Stirling called Paula Baille-Hamilton coined the term obesogens to refer to a series of environmental chemical agents that could contribute to fattening.
The so-called obesogens belong to the group of endocrine disruptors, chemical substances that interfere with our hormonal system causing metabolic alterations that cause, among other things, weight gain.
And, now, a new study carried out by teams from the Universities of Aveiro and Beira, in Portugal, suggests that a simple way to remove one’s shoes before entering the house can help avoid that unwanted weight gain.
But why? For the fact that in that way we reduce the amount of chemical pollutants that we introduce into our home.
According to the researchers, humans eat an average of 50 milligrams of powder per day, and young children double that amount.
Therefore, the best way to avoid metabolic disorders is to avoid as much as possible the presence of obesogens in our home.
Of course, our shoes are not the only source by which these chemical agents can enter our house. They are also present in many cosmetic and cleaning products. Therefore, they recommend reducing their use to the minimum necessary.
Of course, these measures alone will not cause you to lose weight (for that it is necessary to take care of the diet and exercise), but they can help you avoid unwanted metabolic changes that make you gain more weight than expected.
