1. Mike Sonko

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko is one of the most recognized wealthy figures from Machakos, with a net worth exceeding KSh 32 billion. Sonko amassed his wealth primarily through his transport business, which he managed alongside his wife, Primrose Mbuvi. He reported earning approximately KSh 40,000 daily from matatus (public transport vehicles) before entering politics.

In addition to his matatu business, Sonko has significant investments in the hospitality sector, earning an estimated KSh 4 million weekly from his Mombasa club. His assets include multiple mansions in Nairobi, Mua Hills, and the coast, alongside four beach plots and 300 acres of land in Kajiado.

2. Johnson Muthama

Johnson Muthama, who served as the Kangundo MP and later as the Machakos senator, is another affluent individual hailing from Machakos. After leaving politics, he focused on his extensive investments in agriculture, mining, and real estate. His company, Rockland Kenya Limited, is involved in the trade of precious stones like gold and ruby. Muthama also manages various companies, including Rockstone Properties Ltd and Muthama Gemstone Ltd, contributing significantly to his wealth.

3. Peter Muthoka

As the founder and CEO of Acceler Global Logistics, Peter Muthoka has established a successful business generating over $50 million (KSh 6.46 billion) annually. He was previously the largest individual stakeholder in CMC Motors, selling his stake for about $20 million (KSh 2.58 billion) in 2014, further solidifying his financial status.

4. Chris Musau

Chris Musau has made a name for himself in the hospitality and real estate industries. He is the owner of Maanzoni Lodge, a well-known resort located along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. Originally starting as a small family hotel, the lodge expanded to accommodate 360 rooms due to rising demand. Additionally, Musau invested KSh 1.2 billion in acquiring the 680 Hotel in Nairobi, which showcases his astute business acumen. To fund these ventures, he sold 10,000 acres of land.

Machakos’ Economic Impact

Machakos County’s GCP reflects its economic vitality, ranking just behind Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Meru. The economic landscape is continually evolving, with a growing number of millionaires in Kenya, which saw a 30% increase in 2023, placing Kenya as the fourth wealthiest country in Africa.

The wealth of individuals from Machakos not only underscores the county’s economic potential but also reflects the diverse business opportunities available in Kenya. From transport to real estate and mining, the successful ventures of these individuals contribute significantly to the economic fabric of the region. As Machakos continues to grow, its wealthiest residents remain influential figures in shaping the local and national economy.
