If you can’t even keep track of how many products you use every day to look like magazine models, the research at the University of California at Berkeley will catch your attention.

The researchers found that removing cosmetics (makeup, shampoo, and many other personal care products) can substantially lower the levels of hormone-altering chemicals in our bodies. Yes, it turns out that those products that you think please you don’t really contribute much, according to Upsocl.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers delivered 100 cosmetic teens who claimed to be free of certain chemicals like phthalic acid, parabens, triclosan, and oxybenzone. These compounds are very common in soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and even in sunscreens and others.

Some studies have shown that these directly interfere with the endocrine system (responsible for producing hormones that regulate basic body functions).

After three days of examinations, where urine tests were done, the chemical levels decreased markedly. Parabens (used as preservatives for cosmetics) were down 45%. The metabolites of diethyl phthalate (used in perfumes) 27% and triclosan 36%.

Having done the exercise with adolescents allowed them to learn how science can improve their health and that of all the people around them.

We know that change may not be easy, but you can start by using natural cosmetics to control the presence of chemicals in your body. Since they are more expensive, why not make them yourself?
