Content creator Ruth K recently shared a frightening experience where scammers nearly gained access to her TikTok account. The influencer, known for her lifestyle content, skits, and brand promotions to over 700,000 followers, revealed how a well-coordinated scam targeted her through fake verification messages.
Ruth explained that the ordeal began when she received an email claiming she was eligible for a TikTok verification blue tick. Excited by the prospect, she followed up on the email, unaware it was a trap. Soon after, she received a WhatsApp message from individuals posing as TikTok support, instructing her to share verification codes sent to her email.
Ruth noticed red flags when the supposed support team referenced an email address that was not hers. Although hesitant, she initially shared one code but was immediately asked for another code sent to her private phone number. Recognising the danger, she investigated and discovered that TikTok explicitly warns users never to share verification codes.
To warn others, Ruth shared screenshots of the WhatsApp chats, showing persistent pressure from the scammers, including threats to cancel her blue tick application if she did not comply. One message read: “Verify that it is you by giving the six-digit code sent to your phone number and confirm that you are the blue tick applicant.” When she confronted them, they responded: “We did not understand what you said. If you have trust issues, we can cancel your transaction.”
Ruth urged fellow creators to stay vigilant. “I almost lost my TikTok account. They wanted to steal it, and considering how much I’ve struggled to grow it, enduring insults and backlash for the last four years, I could not let that happen. Stay woke,” she said.
This warning comes as a reminder of the growing risks for online influencers, particularly those with large followings. Scammers continue to target social media users by exploiting trust, recognition, and the allure of verification badges. Ruth K’s experience highlights the importance of verifying communications, safeguarding account details, and remaining cautious even when messages appear official.
By sharing her ordeal, Ruth K aims to protect other creators from similar scams, encouraging them to report suspicious activity and follow official platform guidelines. Online safety remains critical as social media becomes both a career tool and a personal platform for millions of users worldwide.
