We all tuned in to Jicho Pevu to find out if we could get more information on who finished off Jacob Juma. But we all got more than we bargained for as the attention shifted from the police reports and other accounts to one Cheryl Kitonga, the alleged mistress of Jacob Juma.
Since the exposé, Cheryl has been trending faster than Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’, proving beyond reasonable doubt that Kenyans enjoy the salacious scandals.
But Cheryl is not the only woman who rose to infamy after a scandal, today we look at some women have been the recipients of public hate and scorn after being implicated in a scandal.
1.Monica Lewinsky
She was a former White House intern who had an affair with President Bill Clinton in the period between 1995 and 1996. Bill initially said that ‘he had no relations’ to this woman but after investigations, it was discovered that he had in fact had relations with that woman.
Monica on her part was brutally shamed by the public, shaming she described as ‘…a skinning of sorts. You feel incredibly raw and frightened. But I also feel like the shame sticks to you like tar.’
Following the scandal, Monica was on the brink of suicide and her mother had to stay by her side. She soon disappeared from the glare of publicity and resurfaced in 2014 to fight against cyber bullying after university freshman Tyler Clementi committed suicide after a video of him kissing a boy went viral on the internet.
Speaking to Forbes, Lewinsky said that she felt the fight against cyber bullying was her ‘calling’ as she had survived public dishonor. ‘Having survived myself, what I want to do now is help other victims of the shame game survive, too.’ She said
2.Caroline Mutoko
When Mutula Kilonzo, a former Makueni Senator died under mysterious circumstances at his Maanzoni ranch on April 27, 2013, Caroline Mutoko was dragged into the scandal. A blog ran by Robert Ali called Kahawa Tungu insinuated that Caroline Mutoko was the mysterious woman in Mutula’s house when he died. The blog even went ahead and insinuated that the two were lovers.
Following the news, Caroline revealed that she had an airtight alibi as the day that Mutula died, she had accompanied Carol Radull to MP Shah Hospital as Radull’s father had fallen ill.
She then threatened to sue the blog for defamation. It’s unclear if the matter went to court, but Alai and Mutoko have not seen each other eye-to-eye following the insinuation that she had an affair with Mutula.
3.Ciku Muiruri
The ‘Busted’ presenter found herself at the receiving end of relentless mocking and shaming after she was spotted in a ‘Jicho Pevu’ exposé being lifted and ‘cuddled’ by one of the notorious Artur brothers.
This was during an investigation story in regards to Saitoti’s death where Mohammed Ali tried to create a link between the Artur brothers and Saitoti’s death.
When describing the controversial brothers, they conveniently attached a video of Ciku Muiruri getting extra friendly with Artur Margaryan.
Ciku defended herself by saying that Mohammed Ali decided to use her clip because she had allegedly refused to give him Winnie’s (Artur’s Kenyan girlfriend) phone number.
Here is part of her lengthy post:
“Yes, that was me with Atur!!!!! That’s an old story, LOL! But for those of you seeing it for the first time, it was shot at a bash that the Atur brothers threw for the media back in the day when their activities in Kenya were still a mystery. I was then the Editor of Pulse magazine of the Standard newspaper. Aware that I was attending said bash, was my boss, the then Managing Editor of the Standard, Pamela Makotsi. I was of the opinion, when it came to the Aturs, that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar and she acquiesced. We were both vindicated, albeit I was in a different media house by then, when I eventually landed the interview of decade. More on that in a bit. Back to the bash where, standing next to me and cut out of the shot, I’m sure on purpose (Perhaps for drama? tut tut) was Eve D’Souza and Sheila Mwanyigha. Also at the bash was the then Buzz (Sunday Nation) Editor, Adhiambo Odera. Pinky Ghelani was also there and numerous others. Atur lifted me onto a counter to make space for all of us to take a picture. I don’t see the relevance of putting that particular clip (of me only) in today’s program unless Mohammed Ali was upset that I refused to give him Winnie Mwai’s number when he called asking for it recently – Dude, you uncover numerous conspiracies and can’t get a simple phone number??? :). “
4.Vanessa Chettle:
Vanessa came into the limelight after she was accused of infecting many celebrities with HIV/AIDS including Shaffie Weru, Ephy Saint and Nick Mutuma.
To save herself from public humiliation, Vanessa did a HIV/AIDS tests on camera to prove that she was clean. Instead of crawling under a rock and hiding following the incident, Vanessa took advantage of this scandal and became one of the most sought-after club hostesses and socialites.
5.Rachel Roy
Rachel Roy is a designer who got caught up in the ‘Lemonade’ firestorm and the elevator scandal where Solange Knowles beat Jay-Z up.
Before the elevator scandal, Rachel was known by few and respected by those in the fashion circles as a great designer who has dressed the Kardashians, Chrissy Teigen and even Michelle Obama .
But after the 2014 elevator incident, Rachel gained worldwide fame and the anger of the BeyHive (Beyonce’s aggressive fans) after she was implicated in the scandal. Rachel’s infamy began after rumors started circulating that the reason why Jay-Z was beaten by Solange was that he had an affair with Rachel.
This year, Rachel was once again thrust into the limelight after the release of ‘Lemonade’; an album which Beyonce insinuates that Jay-Z cheated on her with ‘Becky with the good hair’.
The BeyHive started a witch-hunt for ‘Becky with the good hair’ and unfortunately Rachel was hunted down and bullied tirelessly by members of the BeyHive who flooded her comment section with unprintable insults and bee and lemon emojis.
